On twitter today, a person became a follower of my tweets, Diana Sebzda, and she is a grief counselor. Her work includes counseling people who are deeply grieving the loss of their pet.
In the research unit for the bereavement study at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, we included people who were grieving the loss of a pet. The people who took part in our research were owners of dogs, cats, and horses.

The New York Times featured a story about, Dr. M. Katherine Shear, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University who developed a treatment for complicated grief. The treatment lasts 16 weeks and is mostly a cognitive behavioral therapy. However, the article provides very good information regarding complicated grief, and gives a bit of detail regarding the treatment Dr. Shear uses.
